There was always a door. A big old door, held in place with rusted hinges and the smell of damp in the air.

Rowan walked towards the door. That’s how this dream worked. She knew where it was leading and who was behind that door, but she walked anyway. Walked. Floated. She wasn’t aware of her feet touching the ground. Why did she have to relive this same dream over and over again? She was close to the door now, inhaling the pungent scent of something other than damp. Rotten fruit. Chemicals, like paint thinner. Her nostrils flared up, resisting this intrusion. Rowan’s eyes blinked in irritation.

She stopped in front of the door.

You could wake up now, she told herself. You don’t have to put yourself through this. You don’t have to see her again.

The door swung open by itself. A gust of cold air escaped, causing Rowan to shiver. All the foul smells were encapsulated in that one sample and she knew there was more waiting for her inside the room.

Wanna wake up now?

Rowan walked through the open doorway. It was pitch black inside. She’d been here before of course. Many, many times. She couldn’t see a thing except the angel swinging in mid-air like a giant ornament hanging off a Christmas tree. Faint traces of light began to seep into the room, as if from a window. But there were no windows. Rowan couldn’t see the angel’s face. But she saw the rope. She always saw the rope before that mysterious light cut out, plunging the room back into darkness.

The door slammed shut behind her. This was always followed by the sound of the rope snapping.

A voice whispering her name. Her real name.

The booming thud of the angel landing on the floor. Scraping footsteps. All the odours inside the room were suddenly unbearable. And finally, the sound of laboured breathing as someone hurried towards her, the sound of a rope dragging behind them.
